Home Based Business Marketing
Keep It In Focus

My hat's off to you if you're interested in home based business marketing. So many people fall for those get rich quick schemes that make it sound like you can sit at home by the pool and collect checks, just for being you.

But your home based business really has the potential to grow, and grow quickly, if you focus not just on what your business actually does, but by focusing too on making the business go.

Most home businesses are one or two people doing all the parts of the business. While this is great for control of your time (well, sort of!) it frequently means that marketing is the last thing you want to do, so it doesn't get done.

I've been there. When I was selling real estate I learned to keep a rigid schedule: marketing for 3 hours in the morning, meetings in the afternoon and evenings.

I knew that the well would run dry if I didn't market each morning. After all, it was the marketing that created the meetings in the afternoons.

The result was three straight years of doubled revenues and record-breaking results.

Your small home business marketing can work the same way. Take a freelance writer, for example.

Certainly, the bread and butter of your business is writing. Every moment that you're writing you're earning.

But where does your client list come from? Unless you're guaranteed more work than you can handle year after year from a major client, you'll need to be marketing.

Home Based Business Marketing 101

In general, the trick to create a never-ending supply of clients and prospects is to have a continual program of marketing going on.

There are numerous ways of accomplishing a home based business marketing plan. Some of them can be highly leveraged, such as a web site. Others can be more like tit for tat, call and response.

When creating a web site, implement all of the digital resources you can to make the site work for you when you aren't working. Here are some home based business tips for your online marketing plan:

  • Keyword research
  • Content rich pages
  • Social bookmarking
  • Information products
  • Ecommerce shopping cart solutions
  • Interactive Web 2.0 pages
  • Backlinks

There are quite a few offline and online marketing tools described in this site you can use (some are over in the right hand column of this page – and that list will continue to grow and change over time, so do keep an eye on it).

In case you couldn't tell by the articles on my site, I'm not a big fan of advertising. Sure, it works, but it's not measurable in most cases, and you have to have quite a bit of it to keep your pipeline full.

If you can establish a regular routine in your home based business marketing, you can ensure yourself a regular supply of leads, prospects and clients to your business. But marketing is like a faucet. If you turn off the marketing, you turn off the flow of business.

So make sure your home based business marketing is a regularly scheduled (and I mean daily!) activity.
