Book marketing is a popular method of promoting businesses. It has been for a long time, but the internet explosion and digital technologies have made book marketing promotions really catapult people to the top of their markets very quickly. It's not as hard as it sounds. The hardest part is creating a message that's worth reading. In a great New York Times article figures showed that there were 10,000 books of fiction published in 2004 and the overall number of all types of books published was a staggering 175,000. And that figure represented a 19% increase in publishing for the year, over 2003 numbers. You have to guess that all those books weren't worth reading. Social proof is the litmus test now, more than ever. If you don't get the nod from your public, stick a fork in your work until you do. The good news is that now, because of the internet it's incredibly easy to find your public and reach them. Actually, and even better, they're finding you using search engines, keywords, tags and more. It's the discovery process that helps build your credibility. When your customers find you, they feel safe. You didn't force yourself on them, so they feel they can trust you better. Let's say you want to use book marketing to help promote your bead shop. The process is simple: write a book. Be an expert in your book. Establish your expertise with your tone, your vast knowledge of making beaded clothing, bead jewelry, beaded hats. Show what you've done, what you know. Show how your work fits into the beading world. Give away everything you know. Sounds crazy, doesn't it? By giving away everything you know, you actually create a hunger for more. If you create a really good book, with pictures, and instructions, and a feeling for your reader that you're actually in there, giving away your personality and wisdom to them, you're opening a door. There are a certain number of people (and a certain type of person) who will take all you're offering for free and go off on their own to use what you've given and never give back to you. Rest assured, most won't. Most folks will want more of you, and more of your information. Book marketing enters your audience into the top of your sales funnel. The possibilities created for you by book marketing as I'm describing, as well as by blogging and web site marketing, allow you as an expert to offer your expertise and be discovered by your readers. And the readers who discover you may be a whole lot warmer than the ones you had to advertise to find. It's no mistake that the word "advertise" has the same Latin root as the word "adversary". It has conflict built-in.
